About this Event
Workshop Details
During this two-day course, we will celebrate the naturally derived colours from earth and plants. You will spend time learning how and what to gather for potential colour sources from the landscape. You will learn the transformation techniques involved in converting stones, clay, earth and plants into a range of inks, pastels, paints and charcoals. This will include looking at the history and folklore of materials and how they were sourced and created in the past.
On the first day, you will use wild clay to form vessels for paint and ink holding, which will be fired overnight in a traditional pit firing ready for you to use the following day. Your pit fires vessels will be filled with the inks and paints we make during the workshop to take home at the end of the two days.
Whilst learning about ink making, you will also make your own reed and bamboo pen to add to your collection of handmade art materials.
On the second day, you will learn the art of pastel making, using the foraged pigments processed during the first day.
This workshop will be a celebration of place, colour and the rich history of the human relationship and involvement with the landscape bridging the ancient with the contemporary world.
We will have lots of paints and inks with us from our collection for participants to try out, giving an insight into the huge potential of foraged colour.
About the Artists
Edward and Lucy have been practising artists for the last twenty years working in a range of mediums. During the last ten years, they have founded the Old Mill Gallery in a village located in southwest Scotland. This is a gallery, bookshop and plant dye garden as well as being a place where they have hosted a range of events over the years This has evolved into a workshop hosting space specialising in handmade and foraged art materials alongside the history and philosophy of approaching creative work in this way. They run workshops in this subject both in the Mill and increasingly in other locations around the North of the country.
Materials to Bring
We recommend people bring with them a sketchbook and/or notebook and some paintbrushes suitable for water-based mediums. No previous art experience is required, just an interest in the subject!
