About this Event
Day 1: Create collagraph plates using simple found materials, fabrics, textured papers, glue and more, inspired by simple bird shapes using accessible materials with a variety of textures. Finally shellac the plates and let them dry, before inking and wiping back the plate in order to print onto damp linen or calico. After printing the fabric can be ironed dry before proceeding to the next stage.
Day 2: I will demonstrate how to sew together the ‘birds’ which can be embroidered into (when the ink is sufficiently dry!) We can all make at least one bird on the day. You are welcome to print more birds to assemble yourself at home!
Who is the course for? The classes are suitable for all abilities…beginners are welcome! You do not even have to be good at drawing; if you are excited by textures and colour, then this is for you!
What will you make?
A two-day workshop where you will learn how to create decorative little handmade fabric birds by hand printing onto onto linen and calico using collagraph techniques.
Choose from three simple styles or make them all. All your birds will be individually hand printed on day one, and on the second day I will show you how to hand stitch, stuff, and finally embellish your birds using cotton thread and simple embroidery stitches. These could be a unique and special gift, or a decoration for your home.
What will I need to bring?
All materials and equipment will be provided.
You may want to bring some ideas, imagery or reference material to draw from. Textured paper, net curtain, lace, Doylees, dried flowers, leaves etc. or anything that might make an interesting surface or texture. Please note that very raised or sharp materials aren't suitable to go through our press.
Please wear old clothes as printing can get messy. Aprons will be provided.
You may want to bring a packed lunch and your own water bottle. Teas, coffees and biscuits are provided.
About the tutor
Joanna Allen is an Artist, Printmaker and Textile Designer based in the High Peak, with a Degree in Printed Textiles and Art and Design PGCE, both from Manchester Metropolitan University. Joanna is a member of Peak District Artisans. As well as teaching in schools and running art classes Joanna has been running her friendly collagraph print workshops for over 18 years.
