About this Event

Become a Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®)

This in-person event will occur at The Bramber House, Conference C entre, Level 3, Refectory Road, University of Sussex, Falmer, BN1 9QU. The 'car park 7' is the closest to Bramber House, where you will need to register your car ahead of time.

Starting at 9:15 AM and ending at 5:00 PM each day.

The two-day course takes place in a relaxed and supportive environment where each person is encouraged to learn and explore topics related to mental health and well-being. The primary focus of the course is to provide participants with the confidence and knowledge to support others, while also equipping them with tools to improve their own mental well-being.

The MHFA programme is practiced worldwide and certification is recognised in over 25 countries. The training is evidence-based, grounded in research and designed to be easily digested and incredibly thought-provoking.

Topics covered include: Depression, Anxiety disorders, Bipolar disorder, Eating disorders, self-harm, Schizophrenia and many more.

We also explore suicide and crisis intervention. Crucially, we discuss self-care and the boundaries of the MHFAider® role.


Learners will be able to:

  • Recognise those who may be experiencing poor mental health and provide them with first-level support and early intervention.
  • Encourage a person to identify and access sources of professional help and other support.
  • Practise active listening and empathy.
  • Have a conversation with improved mental health literacy around language and stigma.

All course materials provided: Detailed workbook to keep, Digital manual, MHFA England lanyard, and Certification.

Upon completing the two-day MHFA course learners become a Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®) and join a community of over five million people worldwide who have trained in MHFA skills.

Learners will also receive:

  • A hard copy workbook to support their learning throughout the course.
  • A digital manual to refer to whenever they need it​ after completing the course.
  • A wallet-sized reference card with the Mental Health First Aid action plan​.
  • A digital MHFAider® certificate .
  • Access to the MHFAider® Support App for three years.
  • Access to ongoing learning opportunities, resources and exclusive events ​.

Day 1 PM

Info: In session 2 you will cover: What influences mental health? ​ What is anxiety? ​ Crisis first aid for panic attacks, What is a traumatic event? Crisis first aid for traumatic events, Active listening and empathy , What are eating disorders? ​ First aid for eating disorders, What is self-harm? ​ Crisis first aid for self-harm, and what is substance misuse? ​


Day 2 AM

Info: In session 3 you will cover: What is depression? ​ What is suicide? ​ Crisis first aid for suicide, What is psychosis and crisis first aid for psychosis. As well as applying ALGEE.


Day 2 PM

Info: In session 4 you will cover: Recovery and lived experience ​, Applying ALGEE, Boundaries in the MHFAider® role, Moving forward in the MHFAider® role ​, and my MHFA action plan ​.
