When Portland-based band Blackwater Holylight relocated to Los Angeles three years ago, they sought to break free from the gray comfort of the Pacific Northwest and the safety of the familiar. In this new, unfamiliar environment—without steady jobs or close social circles—the band found the creative freedom to reinvent themselves. This period of transition became the foundation for their fourth album, Not Here Not Gone, a record born from displacement and discovery, where the absence of security gave way to bold artistic evolution.
Musically, Not Here Not Gone continues the band’s signature exploration of contrasts—light and dark, heaviness and delicacy, power and vulnerability. Menacing riffs and dense shoegaze textures intertwine with ethereal vocals and shimmering synths, reflecting the emotional duality of their journey. As drummer Eliese Dorsay puts it, “some songs we’re the predator, and some songs we’re the prey.” Tracks like “How Will You Feel” and “Heavy, Why?” embody this tension, balancing gloom and transcendence with haunting beauty. Even in their heaviest moments, Blackwater Holylight manages to carve grace out of grit, finding catharsis in the interplay between sound and emotion.
