In the 21st century with the emergence of social media and advances in technology, our culture has shifted substantially in the past 20 years. The nerds of the past are now the scientists, engineers and billionaires of today. How we view nerds is different and who we view as a nerd is different. The ideas and fandom of nerds are now the essential engine to our modern society.
Being a nerd is no longer an insult because being a nerd is less about being a social outcast and more about being a part of a larger community. For example, think about how Comic-Con's popularity has grown exponentially and how attendance is so large the event has literally outgrown the city's convention center. Being a nerd means debating the ending of the film Inception, being a nerd means getting excited about detecting phosphine on Venus, and being a nerd means attending midnight showings of Marvel movies. In other words, being a nerd is mainstream. It's cool.
This is a call for artists to express what being a nerd looks like in the age of popularity.
