Hello CNY Theatre Friends,
Many of you, and your actors, had the great privilege to work with Barbara Toman as your costume designer. Some of you may have known her from the nineteen seasons of Syracuse Shakespeare-In- The-Park, where she created marvelous, mostly period, costumes for all our shows. Sadly, as almost every theatre person in CNY knows, she passed away in March 2022 after designing the last show of our 19th season, A Man for All Seasons.
To honor her memory, SSITP has decided to institute a new event dedicated to her. Therefore, we are announcing the:
1st Annual Barbara Toman/ Mama T “Cool Beans” Theatre Costume Awards
We are recognizing the costuming work of all theatrical/entertainment companies in CNY who would like to participate. In order to participate, you need to select at least one costume from the previous year, Nov 2023 thru October 2024, that you feel is the best one for one of your actors to represent the costuming creativity of your organization. The cost for each entry will be $10 and you can enter up to three different costumes.
The event itself is a costume party (apropos around Halloween time) to have fun and raise money for SSITP to present free Shakespeare-In-The-Park for the next twenty-two seasons. Everyone wearing a costume will get to walk the runway prior to the “Cool Beans Costume Awards” theatre fashion show.
SSITP will present three awards for the top three theatre fashions and the top three public costumes. Our judges are: Rebecca Toman, Barbara’s youngest daughter and a jewelry designer herself; Lynn King, a member of our production board who has costumed, acted, and directed many shows throughout CNY, and Toni Niederauer, an SCSD art teacher/artist.
• 7 pm- Hors d'oeuvres, BYOB, live Beatles music from The Silver Beats
• 8 pm- Your chance to walk the runway in your costume & maybe win a prize
• 9 pm- Watch costumed actors from CNY shows nominated for "Cool Beans" Save the Date: Mon., 10/21/24, 7-10 pm, Commonspace Montgomery
We chose this date because most theatres are dark on Monday. Please let me know how many actors you will send in costume for the awards, and I’ll send you the information form to complete about the name of show, character, actor and run dates.
