Everyone buried at Evergreen has a story to tell. Each October, folks gather for a guided tour of this historic cemetery.
Costumed living history actors portray highlighted individuals and stories, including several of the remarkable people who shaped Roanoke.
This year Sam Winkler will portray Gov. Lindsey Almond, the only Virginia Governor buried at Evergreen. As Virginia Attorney General, he sided with the Byrd Machine to oppose integration of schools. As Governor school integration began.
David Gilmer will portray Sgt. Alvin P. Webster, a member of the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, and among the first troops to storm Omaha Beach on D-Day only to be killed in France 13 days later. His body was repatriated in 1948.
Doug Camper will portray Capt. Robert Henry Day, the only Union Civil War soldier buried at Evergreen.
