But by then, the weapon made from one word had been taken as fact, and the rest is history. The story of that faithful and courageous challenger’s witness is told in the documentary film 1946.

Another story of love bringing the opportunity to grow in understanding told in 1946 is the deep friendship of Kathy Baldock and Netto Montoya. The relationship they built as acquaintances-turned-hiking buddies spurred Baldock to begin a process of Biblical research, to determine the basis of historical and current discrimination against LGBT people perpetrated by the Christian church.

While rooted in scholarship and research, the heartbeat of the film are the personal stories of its creators, including that of Director and Producer Rocky Roggio. As the lesbian daughter of a Christian pastor who believes being gay is a sin, her personal journey toward reconciliation and acceptance exemplifies the deep importance of these conversations.

Controversy surrounding the film 1946 was expected! Debut Director Rocky Roggio writes: “1946 won’t change everyone’s mind. LGBTQIA+ discrimination has a lot of momentum that can’t be stopped overnight.” While hoping to inspire conversation in communities of faith, she adds that “...even more important are the potential conversations within families. …Biblical literalism has led to the marginalization of innumerable human beings, not just within the gay community. But most families love each other. And where there is love there is a willingness to learn. Where there is love, there is hope.”
