No advanced tickets required. Presentation included in price of admission to MNCH. “Native Americans and Museums” by Deana Dartt, PhD
The Standards for Museums with Native American Collections (SMNAC) is a comprehensive document designed for museums with Native collections. The SMNAC provides actionable recommendations toward accountability to Native stakeholders,
collaboration with Native communities as well as addresses cultural sensitivity and competency inherent in recognizing the colonial legacy of museums.
In this lively presentation, Dr. Dartt will introduce the origin and development of the SMNAC, why it was needed, explore its function areas, and offer examples of interventions that move museums into alignment with Native goals and values. If you’d like to explore the SMNAC document prior to this presentation, you can download it here. This lecture is intended for museum nerds of all kinds and may include advisory board and executive board members, museum workers and supporters, Native scholars and arts practitioners. All are welcome.
