Learn how to use various censuses to glean information about ancestors that would be helpful in tracing a family history at a special genealogy class offered Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. 17 Decades of Information to Enhance Your Family Tree Through Census Records is from 2 to 4 p.m. in the research library. Advance registration is required and can be made online at https://www.rbhayes.org/news/2025/10/14/general/genealogy-class-focuses-on-using-various-census-information-to-trace-family-history/.
Cost is $15 for non-members and $12 for Hayes Presidential members.
The censuses to be discussed include the standard U.S. census that happens every 10 years, agricultural censuses, American Indian censuses, mortality censuses and state censuses
Agricultural censuses could be helpful in that they list who owned a farm and how the land was used. For example, if a researcher knew a relative owned a farm during a certain year, they could see if it was an orchard and what kind of fruit was grown there, if bees were kept and honey sold, if chickens were raised and eggs sold, etc.
The mortality censuses show who died 1849, 1859, 1869, 1879 and 1884. These censuses are part of Hayes Presidential’s collections and are also available through online subscription services available in the library.
