About Ta Chiu:
Ta Chiu is a Taoist holiday that we have been celebrating for over a decade. Dr. Brian loves sharing his personal practice and ceremony to end the year, and this year we are returning to an in person celebration at Cypress! Because the last two years were so popular online, we will also be hosting the event live online (please see below for details on how to join us).
Traditionally, in China this holiday was celebrated as a winter solstice event and a year end celebration festival. To help usher in the longer days and bring prosperity to those that we love, we celebrate this Taoist event. Traditionally, an effigy of a horse was made to carry the names of the loved ones, placed on a paper and given to the horse, to the heavens to be watched over by our ancestors in the coming year. The horse is ceremonially burned and as it transforms, it carries the names of the people up to the heavens.
Each year, Dr. Brian builds a paper horse, and invites everyone to make a list of names and include them in the horse's baskets to carry to the heavens.
We are happy to invite you to add any names you’d like for us to include in the horse’s bundle. If you’d like for us to include your loved ones’ names and cannot join us in person, please message us here at Cypress or email us with your list by 5 pm est on Dec 27. If you come in person, we will have paper available for you to write your own list.
