16 Breaks is an instrumental ensemble grounded in deep funk, jazz, and the breakbeats that form the backbone of hip-hop and breakdance culture. Evolving from The Sixteen Bars Hip-Hop Orchestra, the band carries the legacy of Atlanta’s rich funk lineage—born from the members of Entropy and extended family groups like Georgia Soul Council, Coley High Players, and Cherry Royale. Focused on rhythm-forward, groove-heavy performances, 16 Breaks explores the timeless loops and sampled sounds that have defined generations of hip-hop. Their sets blend raw musicianship with reverence for the past, often reimagining the foundation tracks of DJ culture and street dance with tight rhythms, soulful harmonies, and live improvisation.
