A discussion exploring the work of women medical writers, past and present
About this Event

Discussion with Dr Sarah J Ghasedi, Dr Marisa Haetzman and Dr Claire Jones.

_____

Dr Sarah J Ghasedi is a lecturer at the University of Washington. Her particular research focus is the campaign for female doctors that opened up the profession to women in nineteenth century Britain. Sarah has recently uncovered anonymous writing of one of the Edinburgh Seven, Sophia Jex Blake, in the periodical press which helped to shape the medical women’s movement.

Dr Marisa Haetzman is a consultant anaesthetist with a master’s degree in the history of medicine. Her research in the history of chloroform led to a collaboration with Christopher Brookmyre, under the pseudonym Ambrose Parry, to write a series of crime fiction novels.

Dr Claire Jones is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, focusing on gender and science in the 19th and 20th centuries. Claire has published widely on women in laboratories, mathematics and learned societies. At this event she is going to focus particularly on the writing of Marie Stopes on eugenics and birth control.
