ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: Libros Schmibros is a bilingual lending library in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. We put books into people's hands, 5 days a week, every week. Since 2010, we've tried to create a place where anybody, regardless of means or status, can walk in and find good books and good company. In addition, we show movies, host public conversations and podcasts, teach classes, install the occasional pop-up around town, read books to kids, lead field trips, and essentially do whatever we can think of to champion the pleasures of reading and its power to change lives. Libros has been honored by the Los Angeles Breakfast Club with a $1,500 grant to refurbish equipment for our increasingly thriving Libros CineClub film screenings.
Boyle Heights is a book desert. There and elsewhere, Libros Schmibros puts good books into all hands, native and immigrant, Eastside and West, upholding literature as the brainstem and backbone of a democratic republic. We are a Boyle Heights-based nonprofit lending library dedicated to the proposition that the world distills its best ideas from imaginations nourished on the humanities. Through everything from book-lending at street level to advocacy at the highest levels, Libros Schmibros champions the pleasure of reading and its power to connect.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: David Kipen (Co-Founder and Co-Director) served as book critic and editor for the San Francisco Chronicle for seven years before becoming the Director of Literature for the National Endowment for the Arts (2005-2010). He has published and edited several books, interviewed dozens of authors, curated film and book festivals (most notably the 60-strong Los Angeles delegation to the Guadalajara Book Festival), and is a frequent reviewer in the New York Times, L.A. Times, and on public radio. He’s the editor of Dear Los Angeles: The City in Diaries and Letters (Random House, 2018), and the forthcoming Dear California: The State in Diaries and Letters (Stanford University Press).
