FULL WALK DESCRIPTION ON OFFER

The circular trail commences at the entrance to the Grabouw Country Club within the reserve. Our journey will lead us along the dam to the indigenous forest where we will take our first break. We will then proceed to Giants Washbasin Falls for our lunch break offering the opportunity to indulge in a revitalizing swim while taking in the breathtaking view of the waterfall and the stunning rock formations that surround it.

Giants Washbasin Falls is a magnificent multi-tiered waterfall that gracefully cascades down rugged rocks into a crystal-clear pool at its base. The flow of water is constant throughout the year but it is most awe-inspiring during and shortly after the rainy season when its volume increases. The falls derive their name from the resemblance of the pool to a large washbasin providing an ideal spot for swimming or cooling off on a warm day. The falls are enveloped by striking rock formations and lush vegetation creating a serene and secluded ambiance. The area is abundant in Fynbos with vibrant Proteas and Ericas adorning the landscape particularly during the blooming season.

The pool beneath the waterfall is deep enough for a refreshing dip and its pristine waters beckon after a hike. Smooth flat rocks encircling the basin offer perfect spots to relax enjoy a packed lunch or simply bask in the soothing symphony of cascading water.

After a relaxing lunch break at Giants Washbasin Falls we’ll continue our adventure by following the Wesselsgat River downstream. This section of the trail is a true gem offering a mix of serene river views lush vegetation and the soothing sound of flowing water. The path meanders through the heart of the reserve surrounded by vibrant fynbos and the occasional sighting of local birdlife. Keep an eye out for the unique rock formations and small cascades along the river which add to the trail’s charm.

Arriving at Curtain Falls

As we approach Curtain Falls the sound of rushing water grows louder signalling the approach of one of the trail’s most breathtaking highlights. Curtain Falls is an impressive waterfall located at Wesselsgat Dam where water cascades dramatically over a rocky ledge creating a curtain-like effect (hence the name). The pool at the base of the falls is perfect for a refreshing swim and the surrounding area is shaded by a canopy of indigenous trees providing a cool and tranquil setting for our break. We’ll take some time to relax and soak in the beauty of Curtain Falls.

The Return Journey Along Eikenhof Dam

After our break at Curtain Falls we’ll begin the final leg of our hike making our way back to the starting point. The return route follows the scenic Eikenhof Dam offering a different perspective of the landscape we explored earlier in the day. As we walk along the dam we’ll be treated to panoramic views of the water mountains and fynbos-covered hillsides. This is a gentle and relaxing section of the trail allowing us to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the reserve one last time.
