The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) will be hosting the first public meeting to discuss a study being undertaken in partnership with the City of Wilmington to explore the feasibility of constructing a separated bike lane (a type of bike lane physically separated from automobile traffic by a barrier, which can be used by people on bikes and low-speed electric scooters) on 12th Street, from Walnut Street to Harrison Street. At this public meeting, the project team will introduce the study, review the study’s purpose and need, review recently collected traffic count data, present preliminary traffic modeling results of different roadway reconfiguration scenarios, discuss potential alternative designs, and solicitation of public feedback regarding the study and the potential alternative designs.A separated bike lane on 12th Street was identified in the 2019 Wilmington Bike Plan as a ‘Priority Corridor’, prioritized as one of the five highest value segments of bicycle infrastructure in the City’s plan. This project concept was submitted to DelDOT by The Wilmington Area Planning Council (WILMAPCO) for prioritization in DelDOT’s Bicycle/ Pedestrian Program and ranked highest in Fiscal Year 2026 for improving mobility for people walking and biking. Engineering design is currently underway for separated bike lanes on three of the other five Priority Corridors from the Wilmington Bike Plan: Baynard Boulevard/ Washington Street, Walnut Street, and 4th Street.
The public workshop will be hosted at the Chancery Market (1313 N Market St, Wilmington, DE 19801) on Monday November 17th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm.
