Mason Henrie will screen his latest short film, In the Frame. Childhood friends Amy and Casey have grown apart but are stuck together in their hometown. Amy is earnest to leave but Casey isn’t ready to lose her best friend. Change is inevitable, but can a different place really fix what you’re missing?
Mason Henrie was born in Salt Lake City and bounces between working in the film and concert world. Growing up making videos with friends escalated into trying to be on set as much as possible. In the Frame was made as a love letter to the city he grew up in while also grappling with the need to leave for something better.
Lit’l Grim is a solo songwriting endeavor of Tate Grimshaw that combines their rock, MPB, power pop and jazz influences to create succinct and catchy anthems. The band has a rotating cast dripping in SLC talent. For 12 Minutes Max, Grimshaw will be accompanied by Eli Andersen (Olympic Deth, Starr67, Infinite Coachella), Stephen Rodgers (Matthew and The Hope, Rodgers & Grim, Bly Wallentine) and David Payne (Red Bennies, Jazz Jags, SLC Demons)
Tom Szalay is a former photojournalist who worked for newspapers before they started to disappear. From 1997 until 2019, he taught photography at West High School in Salt Lake City. Both careers were creative and fun and provided him with meaningful moments, and nice compositions. His photographs have been exhibited in Utah and California and on Social Documentary Network.org

A Blink in Time was created after my older brother Don died. He was a teacher too. My sister and I washed his body after his soul left this plane and tears dried. I have always been interested in the metaphysical and the energy one leaves behind. This film helps me heal that hole in my heart as I ask, what will be going through my mind as I take my last breaths?

Creating this video was one way…
To find solace
Heal grief
Share moments of everyday life
Make me smile
Music for A Blink in Time was composed by Joseph Cook. Joseph is a composer whose works have been performed by ensembles throughout the United States and in Canada. Recent performances have been given by singers at InterMuse Academy (BYU) and the choirs of Salt Lake Community College. Joseph loves writing for instruments and voices, and exploring their combinations. His music spans a variety of styles, from Baroque fugues to contemporary Celtic music and from secular to sacred. In addition to composing, Joseph is a pianist and music director at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ogden and has toured extensively with the Salt Lake Vocal Artists and other choral ensembles throughout 14 countries.

Joseph relishes the opportunity to collaborate on creative projects and has greatly enjoyed working with Tom Szalay as he has produced this film. More of his music can be found on his YouTube channel: @josephcook9985

12 Minutes Max is a curated monthly performance series featuring experimental short works by local artists in many different disciplines, including dance, music, film, and more. Three original pieces, each lasting 12 minutes or less, will be followed by a brief Q&A session with the artists. This program is modeled after 12 Minutes Max, a performance laboratory originated by On the Boards in Seattle.
12 Minutes Max is dedicated to the memory of our dear friend and colleague Paul Reynolds: artist, librarian, and patron of the arts.
This event takes place on the third Sunday of each month.
