Statement of Need: : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant public health concern, particularly affecting children and young adults in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights TBI as one of the leading causes of death and disability within these age groups. Presently, approximately 5.3 million Americans, encompassing men, women, and children, live with permanent disabilities resulting from past TBIs. These individuals face not only substantial financial costs but also profound personal and societal burdens. The long-term impairments associated with TBI—ranging from cognitive and emotional challenges to sensory and motor dysfunctions—are severe, yet the full extent of their impact is often unseen, leading TBI to be dubbed the "invisible epidemic." Unlike physical injuries that are visibly apparent, the disabilities arising from TBI are often hidden, making public awareness and understanding limited. These impairments can drastically alter a person’s career path and have significant repercussions on their social interactions and family dynamics. Addressing these challenges requires concerted efforts to translate cutting-edge research into everyday clinical practice. This conference aims to bridge the existing gaps in knowledge and clinical application regarding concussion and traumatic/non-traumatic brain injury management. Through a series of expert-led sessions, we intend to equip physicians, therapists, and healthcare teams with the latest research findings and practical approaches to enhance patient care. By fostering an environment of collaboration and learning, the conference seeks to advance the adoption of best practices, ultimately improving the quality of life for individuals affected by TBI and mitigating its pervasive impact

Program Objectives: All Northwell Health continuing medical education activities are designed to improve patient care, safety and outcomes. At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to:

Explain the importance of early identification and intervention in brain injury, including the use of neuroimaging and assessment tools to enhance diagnostic accuracy and improve patient outcomes.

Describe the challenges and strategies involved in transitioning patients from hospital to home, with a focus on the roles of case managers, social workers, and the importance of family support in ensuring continuity of care.

Analyze the value of community-based support networks for individuals with brain injuries and their families, identifying resources such as support groups, peer mentoring programs, and rehabilitation services that foster resilience and recovery.

Discuss the unique developmental and educational needs of children with brain injuries, including strategies to support cognitive and social development and insights from parental experiences.

Explain the specific challenges faced by adolescents and young adults with brain injuries, and propose strategies to support their education, employment, and independence, drawing from personal insights and practical advice.

Evaluate the long-term effects of brain injury on cognitive function and overall health, proposing strategies to manage chronic symptoms and promote wellness throughout the lifespan.

Assess the benefits of exercise in enhancing physical and cognitive well-being for brain injury survivors and outline safe and effective exercise programs tailored to various abilities.
