The 10th Mountain Division Band is excited to return to the Clayton Opera House this December for its sixth annual holiday performance “A North Country Carol”. Through music, the 10th Mountain Division Band will represent and champion, to the widest degree, the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, and the U.S. Army throughout the North Country and surrounding regions with impeccable military bearing, professionalism, and high-quality musical products. We will use music to build community, steward tradition, bolster troop morale, and honor the fallen in accordance with the senior mission commander’s strategic communication objectives, as well as all published guidelines, policies, and regulations. Featuring the band’s concert band “Riva Winds” and rock/pop ensemble “Avalanche,” they will perform a one-hour concert.

History of the band: The 10th Mountain Division (LI) Band was originally constituted in the Army of the United States as the 505th Coast Artillery Band on 13 April 1942. This band was activated on 20 June 1942 at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts. It was later reorganized and redesignated as the Army Ground Forces Band on 27 June 1944, relocating to Italy only to be inactivated the following year, 25 September 1945. The band would later be redesignated twice thereafter. First, as the 232nd Army Band on 17 May 1947 and then again as the 10th Infantry Division Band on 18 June 1948. This unit was allotted to the Regular Army on 25 June 1948 and activated on 1 July that same year at Fort Riley, Kansas. The band would be relocated yet again, this time to Fort Benning, Georgia where it was later inactivated on 14 June 1958. Another period of redesignation took place on 3 November 1987 whereby the band received its current name as the 10th Mountain Division (LI) Band. In addition, the band was relocated to Fort Drum, New York.
The 10th Mountain Division (LI) Band earned World War II campaign credit for service in Italy, was deployed to Florida for Hurricane Andrew Relief (1993), to Haiti for Operation Uphold Democracy (1994-1995), and supported Ice Crisis in 1998, performing for ice storm victims and relief volunteers throughout northern New York.
In the winter of 1999-2000 the band deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in support of Operation Joint Forge performing holiday music for US troops as well as the local Bosnian people. In February 2002 the band deployed to Kosovo in support of Operation KFOR, performing for troops and civilians in the towns of Cernica and Ponces, Kosovo. A portion of the band deployed to Afghanistan in 2003 to support Operation Enduring Freedom.
The 10th Mountain Division (LI) Band was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom VII in January of 2006, and again in October of 2010. During both deployments, the band provided musical support not only for U.S. forces but also for International Security and Assistance Forces (ISAF) throughout the Afghani Theater. During their support of OEF VII, twenty members of the 10th Mountain Division (LI) Band were deployed to Muzzaffarabad, Kashmir (Pakistan). Those twenty soldiers performed as a Force Protection team for humanitarian workers supporting relief efforts in response to the earthquake that rocked the area on October 8th, 2005.
The 10th Mountain Division (LI) Band was also deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom VI in May of 2008. While deployed, the band supported ceremonies, and was instrumental in maintaining soldier readiness by improving troop morale through music.
