Ring in the new year with this yoga tradition that will have you setting mindful intentions while working through sets of Sun Salutations alongside the StrongSoul community.A Sun Salutation ("Surya Namaskar") is a sequence of 12 yoga poses ("asanas") woven together to create consistent movement. The tradition of practicing 108 Sun Salutations in a row is rooted in yoga's history.
It is a Hindu belief that 108 is a sacred number. For example — there are 108 Hindu spiritual texts, 108 names for Hindu deities, 108 sacred points on the body in Ayurveda, 108 sacred sites in India, 108 beads on a mala necklace, and the distance between the Sun and the Earth is roughly 108 times the Sun's diameter.
Traditionally, Sun Salutations are practiced to usher in the new day. However, the 108 Sun Salutations are commonly practiced to celebrate the change in seasons or celebrate big life changes. The practice is essentially prayer in movement.
In this class, we will take on ALL 108 Sun Salutations broken down into sets of 12 at a time with breaks in between. For each round, the instructor will set a specific intention to focus on.
**NOTE: You should refrain from this practice if you have any type of physical injury. You should have healthy shoulders for this class as we will be doing many downward dogs and optional vinyasas. Modifications will be offered and highly encouraged. New yogis are welcome, but should have taken a few yoga classes up to this point.
