Hotel Northland, designed by architect Herbert W. Tullgren, opened in 1924 as Wisconsin's largest "Million Dollar Hotel" and closed in the early 1970s. In the 1970s, the building was converted into apartments where the original hotel units were transformed into one and two-bedroom apartments with updated kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, and finishes.
The building later converted into senior and low income housing in the 1980s, named "Port Plaza Towers" in relation to the adjacent Port Plaza Mall. The building eventually closed and was abandoned for roughly 10 years. Hotel Northland re-opened on Valentine's Day - February 14, 2019 as an Autograph Marriott Hotel.
