Roxanne Shanté is a hip-hop pioneer, becoming the first female rapper to have a hit single. Known for her razor-sharp disses, she was the only female member of the hip-hop collective, the Juice Crew.

Who Is Roxanne Shante?

With her distinctive raspy-squeaky voice and fearless gloves-up delivery, Roxanne Shanté cut an idiosyncratic dash through the male-dominated world of 1980s hip hop. She was the first female rapper to have a record — and sparked the first-ever hip-hop beef, the Roxanne Wars. Shanté courted controversy in 2009 when her claim to possess an undergraduate degree and a PhD was disputed by the Slate writer Ben Scheffner.

Early Life

The First Lady of Rap was born Lolita Shanté Gooden on November 9, 1969, and raised in the Queensbridge Projects — the largest public-housing development in north America and one of the epicenters of hip-hop culture. Shanté told the website Jezebel.com that her mom entered her in a local rap battle when she was just 10 years old — and Shanté won $50. "It just grew from there," she said. "I was already a great little battle rapper." Soon she was taking on all-comers on street corners — wiping the floor with older teenage boys from across the projects.

Host

My name is Monique Brown. I'm a go single mother of two from New Brunswick. I'm starting my 24th year working for New Brunswick Public Schools as an Administrative Assistant. Working in the field of education has afforded me the opportunity to inspire and empower the children I work with. I have birthed two children but play the mother role to many. I attended Lincoln University to pursue a degree in Human Services, however, family obligations delayed that dream for right now.

I sought out counseling and ended up partnering with another young lady to start a support group called "Mothers Appeal." Mothers Appeal provided a platform for me to use my voice to tell my story and It is also therapeutic and provides a sense of healing. A local church, First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, put on a play entitled "Yesterday I Died" which chronicled the deaths of young people in our community who lost their lives to senseless acts of violence. Being a part of Mothers Appeal, provided opportunities for other organizations to seek us out and share our stories with others. In one instance, we were featured on News 12 when we rallied for gun violence awareness. Other opportunities have included speaking at the Middlesex County Juvenile Home for boys in Jamesburg, NJ and at different churches in New Jersey, Brooklyn and even at Juvenile Justice Conference in New Orleans.

I am currently serving as the Vice-President of a non-profit organization called "Hear My Cries ", where I continue to work with Mothers to try to affect change in our village! Oftentimes, I hear young children say things like you're either going to J*il or you're going to die. NOOOOOO! Let's change the narrative and then we can change the trajectory of their lives!

It is with the utmost humility and gratitude that I welcome you to Shalay Lash!

It is often said that if you dream hard enough, your dreams will become your reality. I thank you for being a part of my dream.

For many years, I contemplated things that brought me satisfaction and happiness aside from clothing and other high fashion items. I never truly imagined venturing off into the creation of my very own vision. It feels like yesterday when I fell in love with lashes at 15 years old. I now share my passion with the world of the invaluable experience for all women to partake in the very reason I fell in love with lashes so many years ago.

After attending The Art Institute of Atlanta and New York with a focus in fashion, marketing and merchandising, I knew that it was an inevitable fragment of my existence to one day be the proud owner of my own luxury boutique. Shalay Lash  is the first step in making that dream a reality and  it was established atop a multitude of prayers, tears, and sacrifices.

Through the development of my luxurious brand, I can guarantee steadfastness, devotion and hard work are all the makings in the foundation of what is now, Shalay Lash.

"Lay these on your lids and you'll see things differently."

Tray Kearney

Certified Life/Relationship Coach

Tray Kearney is a servant leader whose assignment is helping others heal from matters of the heart.  She is known for her method of helping others heal through her transparency and truth.  Her testimony of going through the storm of infidelity on both sides of not only  being the offender but also the recipient of betrayal gives men and women the safe haven they need to be transparent and honest with themselves without judgement.

Tray states “I’m not here to judge you, I used to be you”.  Her motto is we have all fallen short of the mark.  Tray feels as though she is equipped and ready for an assignment such as this not only from her life experience but also from the investments she has and continues to put into herself for spiritual growth and personal development through several different courses, mentors and coaching programs.

These resources give her not only the tools to complete the task but as she pours she is continually being poured into.  She believes you cannot pour from an empty cup. Tray’s formula is truth + transparency = Healing. Tray is here for those who are ready to heal. She is ready to walk with you hand in hand on your journey of healing.

First Lady of The Get Down 8453 powered by SJU Muzic

An underground house music DJ Patti Kane began DJ’ing in 1990 and hasn’t looked back since. Based in NJ, she was inspired after witnessing Johnny Dangerous of Foremost Poets at a high school fashion show, then Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage and was mentored by Deep Master Ryan of World Paradise. A desire to share her love of music, Patti continued to build on these roots by developing her own election sound in House Royalty. In House Royalty, Patti combines progressive, trance, afro, deep house and jazz fusion to create a smooth but danceable flow.

Not long after, Patti recognized the talent of her fellow female selectors but did not see many of them at vendors. This became the birth of Women on Decks. The goal of this WoD is to ‘even the playing field' by allowing an equal number of male and female selectors to occupy the stage at both small and large ticket venue events because the talent is just as equal.

Patti's final and most exciting venture is owning and running her own label, House Royalty Records, which she started in April of 2021. Since she has studied music since the age of approximately 6, she decided it was time to put the money her parents spent and the time she could not get back to good use. With the assistance of her great friend Jayson Trower of TMG Records, where she did her initial production works and the backing of her perfect team of DJ Sal and DJ Jigsaw, House Royalty Records released its first project in June of 2021. The productions are available for purchase on Traxsource, Beatport, Spotify, Bandcamp, etc.
