Historian Ken Milano will guide a two-hour walking tour through Fishtown. The tour includes Palmer Cemetery and nine other burial locations.
Historian Ken Milano, author of the book, The History of Palmer Cemetery, and the Historical Burial Grounds of Kensington & Fishtown , will guide a two-hour 10 cemetery walking tour through Fishtown. The tour includes Palmer Cemetery and nine other burial locations, which no longer exist. In place of where the nine cemeteries used to be are now houses, playgrounds, parking lots, and even the footings of Interstate I-95 highway. Ken will give short histories of these lost cemeteries, when they were opened, closed, used, removed, etc. The walk through Palmer Cemetery will be more in-depth. Learn about some of the oldest cemeteries in Philadelphia, the fishing and shipbuilding families from the area, and the soldiers interred there from the French and Indian War to Desert Storm. The walk is about 2.3 miles long. Please wear comfortable shoes.

- Salem German Reformed Church – Jackson Street Burial Ground , a.k.a. German Reformed Kensington; German Reformed Jackson Street.
- Mutual Burial Ground of Kensington , a.k.a Helverson’s; Helverson’s Burial Ground; Mutual Frankford Road; Mutual Family Frankford Avenue.
- Union Burial Ground of the Northern Liberties and Kensington , a.k.a West Street Burial Grounds; Union Burial Ground of Kensington; Kensington Union; Union Burial Ground; Malt House Ground; German Burial Ground; German Union Burial Ground; Thumlert’s.
- First Presbyterian Church of Kensington Original Churchyard
- Kensington Methodist Episcopal “Old Brick” Church Original Churchyard
- First Presbyterian Church of Northern Liberties Cemetery
- Congregation Rodeph Shalom’s Cemetery, a.k.a Jew’s Burying Ground at Kensington; German Hebrew Ground; Juliana Street Synagogue; Rodeph Scholem; Hebrew Congregational Frankford Road.
- Hanover Street Burial Ground (3 cemeteries in 1) , Hanover Cemetery; Hanover Grounds.
The tour will start at Palmer Cemetery. The route will include:
• 1410 E. Palmer Street
• Memphis and Orange Street
• East Berks Street and Frankford Avenue
• East Berks Street and Miller Street
• East Wildey Street and East Housekeepers Street
• Richmond Street and Marlborough Street
• East Girard Avenue and Shackamaxon Street
• Coffee break at La Columbe Coffee Roasters- 1335 Frankfort Avenue
• Crease Street and East Thompson Street
• East Columbia Avenue and East Thompson Street
• Returning back to 1410 E. Palmer Street
Attendees are responsible for their own transportation. Parking is limited to street parking near Palmer Cemetery. There is a parking lot ($) on 1320 N. Front Street. This is .03 miles from 1410 E. Palmer Street where the tour begins and ends. The starting point is also a short walk (3-4 minutes - 0.5 miles) from the Berks Street stop on the Market-Frankford Line (Blue Line).
