About this Event
For five years now, volunteers—you—have carried it is OVERDUE. You’ve shown up early on weekdays/ weekends, in the heat, sometimes in the light rain, hauling bags bigger than you are (especially for our little ones!), and still found time to laugh and connect. Together, we’ve taken more than 73,000 pounds of trash out of our streets, parks, and beaches. But the real impact isn’t just the cleaner spaces—it’s the community we’ve built side by side.
A group of strangers coming together to do something good for the community—and becoming longtime friends—what an incredible thing, isn’t it?
One of those friends is Joseph, a former student leader who grew up in this area and led countless cleanups with us. He recently wrote me a letter that really hit home. He shared how being part of this movement gave him confidence, a sense of community, and a push toward his dreams. Now he’s off to college with full scholarships, admitted to schools like UC Berkeley, Stanford, Reed, Duke, Brown, Vanderbilt, and more.
Joseph was kind enough to let me share his letter with all of you, and you’ll find it attached below. His story is proof that what we’re doing goes beyond picking up trash, but we’re building people up. We’re showing what’s possible when folks come together and believe in something bigger than themselves.
That’s why our upcoming 5-year anniversary cleanup at Lake Balboa Park means so much. It’s not just a milestone, it’s a celebration of everyone who has been part of this. Whether you came once or you’ve been with us since the beginning, this anniversary belongs to you.

For the Recycle Art Competition, we’ll provide used coffee cups and art supplies—everyone will have one hour to create an art piece.
This event is more than a cleanup—it’s a reunion, a celebration, and a chance to do something meaningful together. After the competition, we'll gather for snacks and drinks to keep the good vibes going
I’m deeply grateful for every single one of you who has carried us through these five years. Here’s to all we’ve accomplished—and to all the years still ahead.
