The show employs comedy and laughter to address a serious subject. “Depression has one degree of separation: if you don't suffer, then someone you know does.”

Come join us for a night of laughter and awareness at our comedy show tackling important topics like anxiety, depression, and suicide prevention. Our talented comedians will bring humor and light to these heavy subjects, showing that we are all just 1 degree of separation away from someone who may be struggling. Let's come together to support each other and break the stigma surrounding mental health.

“1 Degree of Separation” is a national comedy show and suicide prevention program aimed at ending the stigma of mental illness. Brad Bonar Jr. is a comedian and the creator of 1 Degree of Separation. This performance uses comedians to talk about anxiety, depression, and suicide. It began with its debut show on January 10, 2019. Since then, it has been presented at over 100 events in 11 states.

1 Degree of Separation aims to bring dialogue, awareness, and acceptance for those suffering from depression through laughter and vulnerability. “We laugh at the dark stuff because laughter releases the pain. We talk about depression because no one should feel shame.”

The response and results are impactful and life altering. Audiences have included middle schools to high schools, colleges to corporate clients, first responders to high-ranking military officers, and many more.

With an army of comedians, they hope to end the stigma of depression and share stories of hope, happiness and triumph.

Additional detail:

The first segment of the show is an introduction and brief family-friendly comedy set from each of the four comedians. This gets the audience vested in the individuals on stage and changes the brain chemistry with laughter and humor.

Next, the panel of four comedians join together on stage to answer and discuss the "5 Questions" regarding their own battles with depression. This demonstrates to the audience "how to have a conversation." After the show, the audience receives a copy of these 5 Questions to use as a tool for having their own conversations.

1 Degree of Separation is so much more than an awareness program. This presentation has and continues to help prevent people from dying. Every audience member leaves with life skills and an ability to talk about depression and suicide. Talking about it is the first step to saving lives.
