During this 1 day practical winter skills course we will introduce the core skills required to safely travel about the mountains in winter conditions.
We will start the day by talking about what essential winter kit should be carried in your pack before heading out onto the hill.
Here we will cover movement on snow and ice, including kicking steps and boot work, use of the ice axe for walking and balance, cutting steps and using the axe to arrest a slip or halt a slide.
Moving onto steeper terrain we will introduce the crampons and, through demonstration and practice, we will work through the full repertoire of different techniques to aid safe and efficient travel on snow and ice.
Time permitting we will also talk about planning a winter day with consideration to the weather and avalanche forecasts, winter navigation and emergency procedures.
