John Pihlaja Social Psychologist MSc Solution Focused Therapy
Solution focused techniques have proved effective and transferable across many severe trauma and stress areas, including sudden death, mass shootings, terrorist incidents, natural disasters, combat stress, road traffic collisions, rape and near-death experiences.
In this 1-day interactive workshop you will learn techniques of the solution focused (SF) approach, which address the major concerns for survivors of severe trauma:
triggers
flashbacks
intrusive thoughts
sleep disturbance
‘the lows’
This English language workshop is for both professionals and lay workers who are keen to help severe trauma and stress survivors move forward to a life lived well. Yvonne Dolan’s model of Victim-Survivor-Living life well (Thriving) is recognised, as the workshop unfolds.
One thread that runs through the work is how to help survivors move from being controlled by severe trauma symptoms to a feeling of control, as they make their journey towards thriving.
In parallel, a review of social psychological theory and recent research on the neuroscience of traumatic learning will illuminate the rationale behind the presented methods and their effectiveness.
The content and the process of the workshop draw from John Henden’s best-selling book, What it Takes to Thrive: techniques for severe trauma & stress recovery.
