Twelfth Night is a beguiling mix of shifting moods, lit by the iridescent beauty of “changeable taffeta” – funny, poignant, lyrical, melancholy, sometimes subtle, sometimes outrageous in its comic invention. It ranges from “If music be the food of love” to Sir Toby’s Belch’s “A plague o’ these pickled herring” and thoroughly deserves Hazlitt’s praise as “one of the most delightful of Shakespeare’s comedies”. It presents a study in the follies of love, whether it be romantic love, self-love, love of the good life or love of mischief. Accompanied by haunting songs, aristocrats, a steward, a pirate, a cross-dressing page boy and a professional fool play their parts in the brilliantly plotted action.
We will focus in close detail on particular scenes and passages to engage with language, imagery and characterization. Film extracts and slides (from productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company) will help our enjoyment and understanding of the play in performance. Participants are asked to have read the play in advance and to bring a copy of the play with them.
The day will run from 10am to 3.45pm, with breaks for refreshments and an hour’s lunch break.
