About the work:
With this body of work, Annemarie Wadlow explores the relationship between archives and bodies and how they intersect within themes of inherited trauma and memory. Departing from a film-in-progress centred around the artist's mother, she imagines how transmissions of trauma across generations can leave residues inside the body, and considers holistic approaches to healing. Borrowing its title from legendary filmmaker Barabara Hammer (1939-2019), ‘Single-framing: Second by Second’ alludes to Annemarie’s interest in challenging what we consider as moving image. Her presentation at mono investigates ways of translating and deconstructing a film into space; from single frames of super 8mm film footage, to scratched drawings on acetate, to large-scale textile prints and sculptures, each piece comes together to place the audience within the realm of the film itself, experiencing it in a more bodily way.
BIO:
Annemarie Wadlow (UK, 1993) is a visual artist who works between moving image, drawing, and text. She presents installations or publications that explore notions of inheritance, play with the tension between still and moving images, and correspond with archives, heirlooms and memories that slip between timeframes and generations. After studying and working in London, she moved to The Hague in 2018 to pursue a master’s in Artistic Research. Her work has been exhibited and screened locally at Stroom Den Haag, Heden Galerie, W139, Rozenstraat - a rose is a rose is a rose (NL); and internationally at Alternative Space LOOP in Seoul (KOR). Her debut publication ‘Women Looking at Women Looking at Women’ was selected as one of the Best Dutch Book Designs 2022, and is distributed internationally. Alongside her practice, Annemarie co-runs the experimental life drawing initiative, Nice Flaps.
