✨ What to Expect
This is a focused 3-hour West Coast Swing Workshop, followed by a 1-hour practice session to try everything out.
James Barlett is an internationally respected WCS DJ, Judge, and Instructor, and the founder of West Coast Swing Birmingham. With over a decade of experience on the European circuit and a passion for building local dance communities, he brings clear, accessible teaching and deep knowledge of the dance to every class.
If you already know the five core WCS patterns, you’ll feel right at home for the full workshop. Brand new to West Coast Swing? You’re still very welcome! The first hour will be beginner-friendly and a great way to jump in. The second and third hours build on the basics, so they may feel a bit fast if you’re brand new — but you’re welcome to give it a go, watch, and learn as much as you can.
We’ll play with variations on the fundamentals, learn a stylish mini-routine, and then take it straight to the dance floor during the practice session. Come dance, have fun, and fall in love with this awesome, versatile style! ✨

🕐 1:15 – 1:35 pm — Doors open & intro
💃 1:35 – 2:35 pm — Fundamentals refresher
🎶 2:45 – 3:45 pm — Variations of the whip
💃 3.:55 – 4.55 pm — Variations on the basics for improvers
🎶 4:55 – 5:55 pm — Free practice session
By the end of the workshop, you’ll be confidently dancing variations of the five core WCS patterns — including the whip — with enough moves to freestyle and build your own routines on the dance floor! 💃🕺
