This unique concert unveils the hidden gems of Ukraine's rich musical heritage—masterpieces created by composers and poets who were banned, persecuted, or killed under Russian and Soviet imperialism. Each melody tells a powerful story of resilience, artistic brilliance, and the fight for cultural identity that continues to this day.
🕊️ Join us on a profound journey through music and history. Learn about creators like Volodymyr Ivasyuk, a brilliant young composer murdered at age 30, and Mykola Leontovych, whose globally beloved "Carol of the Bells" (Shchedryk) represents the resilience of Ukrainian culture despite its creator's tragic assassination by a Soviet agent.
🎼 Our programme features:
• "Prayer for Ukraine" by Mykola Lysenko (forbidden during Soviet era)
• "Reve ta Stohne Dnipr Shyrokyi" — by Taras Shevchenko and Hnat Khotkevych (both persecuted)
• "Chervona Ruta" & "Ya Pidu v Daleki Hory" — masterpieces by Volodymyr Ivasyuk (killed under mysterious circumstances)
• "Shchedryk" (Carol of the Bells) — Leontovych's timeless work (killed by the communist agent)
• "Melody" by Myroslav Skoryk (the undercover tune which reflects Ukrainian struggle for independence composed for a soviet movie which had been severely censored by the regime)
• And other treasures reclaimed from silence...
Each piece will be introduced with its historical context, revealing the extraordinary stories behind these powerful works.
