‘’Heaven's Will, Earth's Battle:A Dual Exhibition by Cai Wei-Ren and Li Yu-Cheng‘’

“Heaven's Will, Earth's Battle: A Dual Exhibition by Cai Wei-Ren and Li Yu-Cheng”
The concept of "Those who follow the will of Heaven will prosper; those who defy it will perish" has been deeply rooted in Chinese society since ancient times, profoundly influencing people's psychology and behavior. However, in a modern society where everyone possesses the “Heavenly Eye,” can we defy Heaven and ultimately achieve the possibility of altering our personal fate? In the exhibition “Heaven's Will, Earth's Battle: A Dual Exhibition by Cai Wei-Ren and Li Yu-Cheng,” the two artists delve into the subtle relationship between the celestial realm and human society from the perspectives of deities and mortals.
Cai Wei-Ren's grand quadriptych, “Four Dragon Kings,” depicts serene gods wielding magical weapons, along with immortals, arhats, and sacred beasts soaring in the sky, gazing down upon the earth and overseeing the cosmos. Through the imagery of incense and smoke, he expresses the profound connection between Heaven and Earth, provoking contemplation on the order of yin and yang and individual destiny.
Li Yu-Cheng, on the other hand, explores the theme of combat, examining the role shifts between reality and the virtual world in modern society. He showcases scenes of fighters battling according to a script in an arena, reflecting the inner conflicts between self-realization and external expectations. Each fighter, like a pawn of fate, faces seemingly predestined challenges. Li skillfully connects the drama of the arena with real life, sparking thoughts on free will and fate. His works capture the dynamics and vitality of the athletes with sharp brushwork, probing the elusive nature of self-identity in contemporary society.
The design of this exhibition resonates with the Eastern cosmic view of “Heaven, Earth, and Humanity.” Around the exhibition space, Cai Wei-Ren’s works, symbolizing "Heaven," are displayed, showcasing the authority of celestial beings through the imagery of Dragon Kings and sacred beasts governing the cosmos. In the center, Li Yu-Cheng’s works, representing the mortal perspective of "Earth," highlight the intense yet futile human desire to control destiny. We have also invited friends from around the world to record videos exploring the theme, “Is life scripted?” encouraging further dialogue between the self and the cosmos. This exhibition not only provides a novel visual and spatial experience but also seeks to evoke reflection and reconstruction of the relationship between self and destiny.
