Carnegie-Stout Public Library will show the movie "Lilies of the Field" on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. in the Aigler Auditorium on the Library's 3rd Floor. Admission to this special matinee is free, but seating is first come, first served.Starring Sidney Poitier, "Lilies of the Field" (1963) is a comedy drama about Homer Smith, an ex-G.I. and itinerant handyman in the Arizona desert who is persuaded by three East German immigrant nuns to build a chapel and teach them English.
The movie was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture. The Best Actor Oscar went to Sidney Poitier, who became the first Black actor to win in a leading role. In 2020, the movie was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
