More about this event

A Morning with Freud: Rare Access to Museum Archives

A special coffee morning at the Freud Museum, beginning with delicious coffee, apple strudel and the chance to sample the Museum’s plum jam, made from this year’s harvest from the plum tree in Freud’s front garden.

Our Museum Director, Dr Giuseppe Albano, and Freud biographer Professor Stephen Frosh will warmly welcome you and share the fascinating story of Sigmund Freud’s final year at 20 Maresfield Gardens.

As we mark the 85th anniversary of Sigmund Freud’s death we are offering a tour of the Museum including parts of Freud’s home which are normally off-limits to visitors.

Step back in time and explore Freud’s last year in his historic London home after fleeing Nazi-occupied Vienna.

Wander through rooms filled with his personal treasures, including the iconic psychoanalytic couch, and delve into the legacy of Anna Freud, a pioneer in child psychoanalysis. This is your chance to experience history, science, and the remarkable lives of Sigmund and Anna Freud up close.

Daniel Bento, our Operations Manager and the son of Anna Freud’s trusted house custodian, will personally guide you to the Museum Archives, where you’ll see the couch on which Freud passed away in 1939—a rare opportunity, as this piece is not usually on display. Daniel will also lead you through other hidden areas of the house, normally closed to the public, including Freud’s secret art deco lift and the terrace and loggia designed by his architect son, Ernst Freud.

Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with the history of one of the most influential minds of the 20th century. Members and patrons are welcome to bring guests at the same special rate. Reserve your place today for an extraordinary morning at the Freud Museum—an experience not to be missed.

The tour will also include an overview of some of the Museum’s imminent plans for development and our forthcoming exhibitions programme.

After the tour, feel free to continue exploring the Museum and Gift Shop at your own pace when we open to the public at 10:30 AM.

As our ‘Kaffee und Kuchen’ mornings sell out quickly we are offering Freud Museum Members and Patrons priority bookings for this special event. You may bring guests for the same discounted rate of £28.

Stephen Frosh recently retired as Professor in the Department of Psychosocial Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, UK. He is the author of over 20 books on psychosocial studies and psychoanalysis including the biography Simply Freud (2017).
