Join ʻŌhiʻa Love for a special workshop to make your own beautiful ʻŌhiʻa-free holiday wreath.
About this Event

Each year, ʻŌhiʻa Love holds a small workshop in Hilo to make ʻŌhiʻa-free holiday wreaths. We celebrate the season by making a wreath with beautiful plants, flowers, and fruits, excluding ʻŌhiʻa, to avoid injuring them, as this can make them susceptible to infection by the fungus that causes Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death.

We will provide each registered participant a wreath form, lots of greenery pins, and some flowers and foliage, and go over some basic wreath-building instructions.

What to bring: We count on everyone bringing 15 large Ti leaves (green, red, variegated) and a collection of clean foliage, flowers, and fruits to use and share with others.

If you can bring your own clippers and a snack to share, that would be great too.

Good plant choices for wreaths will stay green or dry nicely. Different ferns, evergreens( Pine, Cedar, Wāwaeʻiole, Norfolk Island Pine), colored Ti, and Draceanas, Pūkiawe also look great and hold up well. Waxy flowers like Anthuriums, Heliconias, some orchids, or papery flowers like ʻAʻaliʻi and Bogainvilleas do well. Bottle brush makes a great substitute for lehua. Fragrant leaves like Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Citrus, and Cinnamon also make great additions. Fruits from Pohinahina, ʻŌhelo, or Ti can be used.

If you collect from forests, make sure you have the proper permission and permits.

Please take the time to check, clean, and wash any plant material to avoid spreading pests (fire ants, thrips, etc) or diseases.

When: Friday, December 19th, 10 am-1pm

Where- 875 Komohana Street in the A-conference room on the 2nd story. There is an elevator for your convenience.
